The theme I have chosen to follow for Unit 2 is Alternate Universes. I have drawn inspiration from images such as these I have seen online, I have also been inspired by a close friend of mine, she is doing Studio Arts, and she had come up with a brilliant idea of universes, and how there could be the possibility of many different universes, giving the opportunity to give an opposite to every photo taken, that there is an equal and opposite item, object, feeling, person, gender etc, in another universe, in an alternate universe. I have taken inspiration from that idea and have decided to take that aboard and change it to suit me and how I perceive what may be out there, hence the some of the reflections in the photos above, and the photos demonstrating the idea of split personality. For example, I have a very heavy interest in music, and the opposite of music, sounds, beat, rhythm etc, is silence, stillness, and I shall try to emanate that in my work by showing the opposite of what music is, somehow showing emptiness. I am quite intrigued and terrified by the idea of the unknown, no body ACTUALLY knows what is outside this planet, out side this solar system. None of the technology we have developed in the last century has had the capability to venture any further, hence leaving it unexplored, by the human race anyway. Which is another idea I wish to incorporate in my work, the unknown, even if its as simple as, "Oooh! What's behind that door?" Another idea that I will add to my work is Isaac Newton's Third Law of Physics, that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, but I do not intend to include physics in my photography by literally following these laws. For example, the opposite of black is white, red-green (or blue), purple-yellow. Weather and time, you take a look at a tree and six months later it will look completely different, a hot sunny day can become wet and miserable in a matter of hours (in Melbourne anyway) hence alternating the day entirely, which could create an entirely different photo too.
The aspects of these works I am planing to use in my own work is the idea of black and white, and making parts of it high contrast, or having it colored and high contrast also. I would like to experiment using Photoshop with my photography, whether it's excessive or not, just to see what makes my work more interesting visually. For example if I were to take ideas from the image with the shoes, if I were to do something along those lines, I would need to Photoshop to basically create the picture. I haven't yet chosen a specific medium, I imagine I would be using mainly digital photography, but I have ideas to play around with film photography, experimenting with burning, dodging, and if needed, touching up the photo with little paint brushes with ink etc. I am looking at improving my Photoshop skills so I can manipulate images to make my final works. As of yet, I am not quite sure on how I intend to present my final works, I am not even sure on what I plan to do as a final(s). I am particularly interested in looking into high contrast portraiture possibly incorporating the idea of split personality. |
